FAITH PLANS

OVERVIEW

Faith groups are responding to the 'cry of the Earth and the cry of the poor' by developing Faith Plans for People and Planet. These are long-term faith commitments to use their buildings, lands, investments and influence to drive practical action on climate change, biodiversity and sustainable development. The Faith Plans are partly a roadmap for faiths to implement to improve their sustainability, and partly an idea of what could be achieved with additional funding.

‘Given the size of their assets and influence, faiths alone, through their actions, could make the crucial difference to the world's efforts to halt irreversible climate change and reverse environmental destruction’

– Martin Palmer, FaithInvest President and former Secretary General of the Alliance of Religions and Conservation

How it works

THE FAITH PLANS FRAMEWORK

FAITHINVEST3-transparent1.png

The Faith Plans project was initiated by FaithInvest and WWF's Beliefs and Values Programme, and supported by a wide range of faith-based networks. It was inspired by a similar initiative launched by the Alliance of Religions and Conservation in 2009, which saw more than 60 faiths globally develop Long-term Faith Commitments for a Living Planet, and profoundly changed how faith groups responded to the environmental crisis.

The Faith Plans framework focuses on Seven Key Areas where the world’s major faiths can have a long-term environmental impact. They range from tangible assets (such as land, buildings, forests and investments) to their huge capacity for influencing others through their teachings, advocacy, wisdom, stories and practices. This framework is not prescriptive; each faith group will chose which areas apply to their own particular community, situation and priorities.

A dedicated website – www.faithplans.org – has been created to inspire faith communities to use the framework to assess their own environmental performance and showcase what they are doing. As well as more information on each of the Seven Key Areas, there are useful practical resources, such as a step-by-step Planning Guide to help faiths as they start to create their Faith Plan, as well as case studies and recordings of webinars on various topics.
